Detroit Tigers’ Jim Leyland believes in resilience of his team despite setbacks – MLB Playoffs
The Detroit Tigers are not giving in to despair and looking to neutralise the critical effects of the recent setbacks. Not only did the team lose the first of the best of seven game series against the Texas Rangers in the American League Championship Series
but also a couple of their most important players.
Of particular concern, however, is the loss of their out-fielders. Magglio Ordonez is out of the season due to a broken ankle and Delmon Young has his set of problems that render him unable to play. But much as the magnitude of problem seems huge, the team
is hiding their nerves.
Crucial as their performance had been in helping the Tigers win the American League National Series against the New York Yankees, matching the excellence of the Tigers’ hitting seems beyond the bounds of possibility now due to the two out-fielders’ loss.
The team manager Jim Leyland, who has been key in bringing the Tigers where they stand today, believes his players have resilience and will stage a comeback.
"We're a real resilient team," Leyland said. "Do I like this? Obviously, no. Do I like losing Delmon? Obviously, no. But we're a tough team. We'll figure something out, and we'll get through this.”
Jim Leyland observes that such problems are inalienable parts of baseball. That is where the mettle and nerves are tested.
“We're like every other team in baseball that has these type of situations pop up. You get through it. We're not going to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. I can guarantee you that."
It therefore becomes easy to see what is on cards when the Tigers will face the Rangers on Monday. As the rain continues to wash away the game, it is helping the Tigers to help regain their composure. With important players gone, the Tigers as a whole have
not shown any hopelessness yet.
Nonetheless, what the fans want to see on Monday, against the heavily confident Rangers, is a tough resistance by the Tigers. That will only come when Detroit put the worries in the backburner and look forward to overcoming their rivals.
