Detroit Tigers’ Jim Leyland talks about Doug Fister and verifies Justin Verlander’s unavailability
The Detroit Tigers will be looking to head out to Yankee Stadium in search for a win over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. The two teams are tied 2-2 in the series and the final game on Thursday, October 6 will determine
who will move on to the American League Championship Series to meet up with the Texas Rangers.
Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland has made his decision and he is putting Doug Fister up against Ivan Nova.
Leyland talked to the press from New York on Wednesday, October 5. The manager talked about the match up and explained what he thought of his premier pitcher who went 11-13 in the season.
"Fister is a really good pitcher," Leyland said. "Nova is a good pitcher. He beat us in the first game here. It's one game. I don't know what's going to happen. Somebody can get a good bounce or a bad bounce."
Fister was involved in the 3-9 club loss to the Yankees on September 30 when the Tigers took on their rivals for the first game in the division series. The Detroit hurler conceded six runs off seven hits in 4.2 innings of play. Leyland believes Fister has
the authority to bounce back in the game.
Yankees are making sure Nova gets the job done and they are placing CC Sabathia in the bull-pen for the game. In response, Justin Verlander will not be making an experience. The player will be benched by Leyland and he is not looking to use him in the game.
"I don't think it's disappointing at all," Leyland said. "What happened is you saw him and CC in that game at home. It was electric. Certainly, everybody got their money's worth."
The Tigers and the Yankees are very strong when it comes to hitting. The question now is, can Fister do the job? It will be a highly anticipated game between the Tigers and Yankees. Both teams will be looking to go all out and get a victory.
