Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander claims his third straight postseason win – MLB Update
Justin Verlander and Detroit’s star pitchers are just one win away from entering the World Series. Verlander put up another powerful performance on Tuesday evening to help the Tigers edge past the New York Yankees 2-1 in Game 3 of the American League Championship
Series.
Tigers’ valuable asset, Verlander took a shut-out into the ninth inning at Comerica Park to set up a comfortable win for his team. Riding Verlander’s back, Tigers grabbed their third straight win against the Yankees to claim a 3-0 series lead.
Tigers have not won the World Series title since 1984. However, they are on a historic pitching run these days, giving up just four runs in the entire series against the Yankees.
Verlander will be slightly disappointed with the fact he was unable to complete his second straight shut-out victory. He had shut-out the Oakland Athletics in the decisive Game 5 of American League Division Series.
Yankees’ Eduardo Nunez scored the only run against Verlander as he homered to left in the bottom of the ninth. However, Nunez’s effort did not prove to be enough to pull his team out of trouble.
For the Tigers, Delmon Young had another great outing as he smacked a home-run to left in the fourth. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera also made his presence felt with a double to deep right centre.
"I've got faith in our bullpen. Coke did a great job in New York. He's done a great job for us all year, so I was OK with it," Verlander said in a post game interview. "And I was up around 130 pitches or so, so I don't think they're just going to leave me
out there and sacrifice the rest of the postseason just for this game, especially when Coke's been throwing the ball extremely well."
Relief pitcher Phil Coke also showed great temperament and composure as he gave up two singles with two outs in the ninth before striking-out the inform Yankees’ hitter Raul Ibanez. With Max Scherzer starting for the Tigers in Game 4, they will have an excellent
chance to earn their second pennant in seven years.
