The 2011 MLB Sporting News annual post-season awards is a premium event at the end of the season every year and winning awards in this event certainly make every player more likely to win in the MLB’s official post-season awards.
The Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander won yet another award for his brilliant performance in 2011 Major League Baseball season. He has named the Player of the Year by a renowned sports media group on Friday. Verlander had a tremendous year
for the Detroit Tigers, as they made it to the playoffs this year.
Earlier, on Thursday the Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila and Verlander were named to Sporting News’ annual post-season All-Star team by majority of 289 players, 23 managers and 55 Major League executives, who voted in favour of them.
Justin Verlander, who led the Tigers in most of the Majors (24), along with 250 strike-outs, the opponents' batting average remained at .192 and a .92 WHIP, leading the American League in ERA with 2.40 and also pitched his second career no-hit game on May
7, 2011.
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland is a huge fan of Verlander’s talent, who has said in the past,
“One of my favourite lines is you can't make a senior out of a freshman like he did in he past, It takes time. ... You have to go through different experiences and skills and before you really get to (your) peak. I think Justin has taken it step by step
and now taken over the stage. He had the big year in 2006.”
His pitching skills were not on the spot when he entered Major League Baseball but matured with time. The prime emergence of this skilful pitcher witnessed by many in 2006 season where he recorded (17-9, 3.63 ERA) that was the main reason of his winning
Rookie of the Year honours. Later, his game gripped more power and in 2007 his stats reached (18-6, 3.66) soon in 2008 he recorded (11-17, 4.84) and started to dominate the league hitters since then.
