Detroit Tigers’ Magglio Ordonez out for the rest of the post-season – MLB News
The Detroit Tigers received some shocking news on Sunday, October 9 when their out-fielder Magglio Ordonez was announced to be out of the playoffs in the American League Championship Series.
The announcement came when Game 2 between the Tigers and Texas Rangers was postponed until Monday, October 10 due to heavy rain.
Either Andy Dirks or Don Kelly will replace Ordonez now. What may transpire as a worrying factor are the technicalities involved in replacing Ordonez. If he is replaced through roster, Ordonez will not be able to play the World Series (if the team qualifies
for it).
Rumours were swirling since morning that Ordonez was unable to appear in Game 2 because of an ankle injury he got during practice. However, the rumour turned out to be a veracious account as a press release afterwards revealed Ordonez had broken his ankle.
The news has a lot of unsettling elements for the Detroit Tigers. The team already has a shortage of out-fielders. Earlier, a mild oblique strain took away Delmon Young while the Tigers had their last game against the New York Yankees in the American League
Division Series.
Detroit Tigers lost Game 1 by 1-2 against the Rangers just when Ordonez had to have a pinch-runner. The team manager now says he is out for the rest of the season.
"Magglio Ordonez will be out for the series with the ankle injury -- the same ankle that he had the problem with," Leyland said. "He will be done for the season. That's why he was taken out of the game last night. We didn't have all the facts and details,
but we've had some medical work done this morning."
There was also news that Ordonez had informed his team manager of his broken ankle through email. Leyland referred to that as well.
"That's correct. That's exactly why I pinch-ran for Magglio," said Leyland, who claimed he had no explanation for why the ankle again began bothering Ordonez.
With out-fielders gone, what remains to be seen is how the Tigers compensate the recent setbacks.
