Detroit Tigers’ Magglio Ordonez out of the playoffs – MLB Playoffs
The Detroit Tigers were not in action on Sunday, October 9 against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Rain postponed the Game 2 encounter of the American League Championship Series and it also spelled trouble for the visiting Tigers as Magglio
Ordonez was declared injured and he is not going to feature in the playoffs.
Manager Jim Leyland spoke to the press from Arlington on Sunday about the deliberating situation.
"Magglio Ordonez will be out for the series with the ankle injury - the same ankle that he had the problem with," Leyland said. "He will be done for the season. That's why he was taken out of the game last night."
The Tigers played Ordonez in Game 1 of the Series against the Rangers. The match was tarnished by two rain breaks that broke up the momentum. The Texans won the fixture 3-2 while the Tigers went behind in the competition. Ordonez informed the press earlier
that he had twisted his ankle during a pregame batting practice on Saturday.
Not knowing that the ankle was broken, the player complained about the problem during Game 1. He was pulled back off base in the encounter but no suspicion of serious concern at the time.
The move leaves the manager without two top outfielders. With only Ryan Raburn left in the far end of the ballpark, there will be a need for a replacement. Ordonez was .455 against the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. With five hits,
one run, one double and one walk, he proved to be a useful commodity for the period of 11 at-bats.
The Tigers will be looking to find a suitable replacement for both Ordonez and Delmon Young. The management is working towards putting together the proper line-up as they are currently behind in the Series. It will be interesting to see which players are
activated by the Tigers to come in fill some pretty big shoes in this crucial time during the Series. Time will tell to see what line-up the Tigers come out with as they face the Rangers.
