Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander looking to share prestigious awards – MLB Update
While baseball has its celebrity parallels to Hollywood’s stars and politicians, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander can take it easy. Both Detroit Tigers’ stars put together a fine season last year and they both are favourites to win in their respective
categories.
Cabrera, in particular, posted the best season of his entire Major League Baseball career as he hit .330 with 44 home-runs and 139 RBI’s. His .999 OPS was also among the best in the American League. His consistent performances helped him win the Triple Crown
Award in September and now he is in line for another prestigious award, the 2012 American League Most Valuable Player.
Verlander also continued his excellent form in 2012 as he fanned 239 batters. His 2.64 ERA and a decent 17-8 record suggest the comfort level he felt all through the regular season. Other finalists for the Cy Young Award include David Price of Tampa Bay
Rays and Los Angeles Angels’ Jered Weaver. Both Weaver and Price claimed 20 wins the past season.
Price also posted some impressive numbers, going 20-5 with an outstanding 2.56 ERA. However, he faced pitched fewer innings and therefore faced 120 fewer batters.
Weaver, just like Price, finished 20-5 record with a 2.81 ERA. He also led the league starters’ in WHIP at 1.02. However, he is also behind Verlander in innings pitched and batters faced.
Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers’ Adrian Beltre and Josh Hamilton, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees are the other candidates for the AL MVP along with Cabrera.
Trout also had an excellent time with the bat in his rookie year with the Angels. He started the season on an extremely strong note and although he was unable to continue his sensational hitting form in closing stages of the season, he became an automatic
pick for the year’s AL MVP. However, considering the fact Cabrera’ average of .330 is considerably higher than that of Trout.
The question is whether the two Tigers will be able to whip their competition. Answers to all the questions are expected to be announced on Wednesday.
