Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera has strong case for Triple Crown and MVP honours – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ slugger third baseman Miguel Cabrera is a strong candidate for the Triple Crown Award this season. In some ways, Cabrera should be thankful to his team-mate Prince Fielder who not been able to live up to expectations, giving Cabrera an opportunity
to outshine him.
In a game against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, Cabrera smacked two mighty home-runs including a grand slam, helping his team cruise to a memorable 12-2 win at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
The grand slam Cabrera hit was recorded to be 446 feet long and it indicates the kind of hitting Cabrera in capable of. His ability to pick sliders, curveballs and fastballs out of the pitchers hands is what makes him an asset for the Tigers.
Athletics, which undoubtedly have one of the finest pitching attacks in the American League, had no answers to Cabrera’s onslaught on Tuesday. Having hit 40 home-runs so far this season, he is only the sixth Tiger to achieve such a feat. Prince Fielder’s
father Cecil Fielder was the first to reach this milestone in 1991.
"If he ain't the MVP, there shouldn't even be an MVP for the league. His numbers speak for themselves. If you've gotta win a Triple Crown to win an MVP,” team-mate Gerald Laird said.
"They're being aggressive with me and I'm an aggressive hitter," Cabrera said, who also added a double in a 3-for-4 night at the plate. "It doesn't have to be in the middle of the plate to swing the bat, you know? If it is gonna be something close, I'm gonna
be aggressive and put my best swing on it."
"He's awesome," Fielder said. "I mean, he's the MVP."
With his incredible effort against the A’s, Cabrera also raised his RBI total to a league leading 129. Considering the fact there are still around 14 games to be played this season, the right hander has an excellent chance to make a serious run at one of
games’ rare feats. Carl Yastrzemski was the last hitter to win the Triple Crown Award 45 years ago.
