Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera reaches camp and apologises – MLB News
Detroit Tiger’s Miguel Cabrera reached camp, apologised and discussed with team officials issues related to his recent troubles with alcohol.
After taking part in full-squad workout Cabrera met with reporters to discuss his rehabilitation plan for his alcohol related issues.
"I just want to say that I'm very sorry for what I've done," he continued through translator Al Avila. "I want to apologize to all my teammates, my owner, my family, my friends and everybody that I've let down. I've worked very hard for a period of time
in overcoming this. I just want to get back and play and have everybody forgive me. I ask for forgiveness."
Cabrera was recently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest. He also went on to apologise to the police officers.
It seems that Major League Baseball is not taking too kindly to his recent behaviour. Cabrera is to enter into a rehabilitation program that will be carefully monitored by doctors and the MLB. This is the same treatment plan that Texas Rangers’ Josh Hamilton
went through for his substance abuse issues.
The team will be disappointed with Cabrera as they are right in the beginning of the spring session which leads into the regular season. Detroit would not want to have this type of negative attention on the team and the other players at this stage, as they
are trying to get ready for a grueling season ahead. The team will not want any distractions and undue media attention on the squad as they continue with their workout sessions.
Cabrera himself looked disappointed as he understands the mistakes that he has made and the affect that it may have on the team during the regular season. A positive point is the fact that he has accepted his issues and is now ready to deal with them through
rehabilitation. It is reassuring that the MLB has also taken quick action on this type of behaviour and has identified the issues to help the player get through his problems.
It will be interesting to see how the Detroit Tigers manage to get their workout sessions in with all the media hype being created around Cabrera. The Tigers are a very talented and multi-faceted team capable of making it to a possible post-season position,
however they will be very careful not to get too much negative exposure from the actions of Cabrera and have a media circus around to distract the team and players from performing.
It is hoped that Cabrera will stick with rehabilitation program and make his way out of his alcohol related issues to focus on playing baseball for the Tigers.
