Detroit Tigers’ Omar Infante on the road to recovery – MLB News
According to mlive.com, Detroit Tigers’ second baseman Omar Infante is on the road to recovery. Infante, who suffered a wrist injury, will be entering 2013 Spring Training under no restriction, the source further claimed.
The 30 year old fractured his left wrist after he was hit by a pitch with two outs in the ninth inning in Game 4 of the World Series against the San Francisco Giants.
“Detroit Tigers second baseman Omar Infante is on track in his recovery from a broken wrist and is expected to enter spring training under no restrictions,” said James Schmehl of mlive.com.
Infante’s injury was not serious and it did not require a surgery. Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland expects the second baseman to be fully healthy before the start of 2013 Spring Training.
Acquired from the Miami Marlins in a trade in 2012, Infante produced several match winning performances last season. Overall, he hit .274 with 12 home runs, 53 RBI’s and 17 stolen bases, helping the Tigers win the American League Central Division title.
After coming to Detroit, he averaged .257 with four home runs and 20 RBI’s in 64. Infante is expected to be Tigers regular second baseman. The Tigers could also use infielders Ramon Santiago, Danny Worth and Jeff Kobernus as a backup for Infante.
"I have not talked to him, but to my knowledge, he'll be absolutely 100 percent. If you can pencil a guy in there every day at a position and you're not worried about picking and choosing against a certain pitcher other than to give a guy off, that's a total
luxury," Leyland said in a news press conference in Nashville. "The more everyday players you have, the easier it is for you."
When the Tigers entered their Spring Training camp in Lakeland last season, they were without an everyday second baseman. Absence of regular second baseman provided the likes of Ryan Raburn and Brandon Inge with an opportunity to win the spot. However, Leyland
said it was not an ideal situation for the Tigers and the team will be feeling more confident going into Spring Training with Infante in the lineup.
