Detroit Tigers’ Phil Coke looking to impress as starter – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ Phil Coke is looking to put in a good performance and make a good impression as a starter for the team during the regular season.
Coke understands the immense pressure and responsibility of being a starting pitcher and he seems up to the task.
As Spring Training begins, Coke is looking to dominate in his role as starting pitcher. The spring workout session give the players and teams a good opportunity to build up the roster and finalise the rotation and line-ups. Coke is a tremendous pitcher with
immense talent, as he is a consistent performer on the mound. He can dismantle any top batting order within a few deadly throws during a game.
The Tigers are fully aware of Coke’s abilities on the mound. He is a starter for a reason and the team will be looking to him for guiding them through the grueling regular season.
"You want a guy that's going to go out there and just chew up innings," Coke said, "because it makes it so you as a bullpen guy have peace of mind that I don't have to have my hand resting on the panic button. When that phone rings in the first inning, and
the starter's at like 40 pitches in the first inning, that's what we don't need. We don't need that negative feeling."
During the 2010 season, Coke managed a Win-Loss record of 12-8 with an ERA of 3.75 and 116 impressive strike-outs. His statistics have shown that he is the right pitcher for the job as starter for the Tigers.
Coke understands the importance that a starting pitcher carries for a team during the regular season. If he gets it right, then the team is in a good position, however if he gets it wrong, the team will definitely struggle and quite possibly even lose the
game from any pitching issues.
Spring Training will allow Coke to take on some of the highest calibre batting line-ups in the League. The Tigers will be looking at his performance closely to gauge his effectiveness against the different batting line-ups. The team want to win as many games
as possible during Spring Training and for them Coke is a key component for a winning combination.
It will be interesting to see how Coke can manage the pressure of being a starting pitcher for an immensely talented team like the Tigers during the regular season. The team is looking to build some confidence and get some much needed momentum that they
can carry into the regular season. Only time will tell how effective Coke is for the Tigers as the focus will be on him as soon as he takes the mound.
