Detroit Tigers: Regular Season Results – MLB July 2011
After ending the previous month on a high note, the Detroit Tigers were hoping for a similar start to July 2011 as well. However, that did not turn out to be the case as they suffered two big defeats in the opening two games of their three match series against
the San Francisco Giants.
Despite making a decent start to game one against the Giants, the Tigers lost their way to let the opposition take a close 4-3 victory. Short of confidence, Detroit Tigers made a large number of unforced errors in the second game to experience a humiliating
3-15 loss. Despite having home advantage, they failed to live up to the expectations.
"It was pretty ugly," Leyland said. "Three of our last five starting performances haven't been good."
Max Scherzer, who was quite brilliant earlier in the regular season, allowed nine runs on six hits and three walks over two plus innings. However, Tigers managed to restore some of the lost pride with a decent 6-3 performance in game three against the Giants.
Leyland’s side continued to struggle in the series against the Los Angeles Angles as they lost the opening game 5-1. Although the Tigers put up a great fight in the second game 0-1, they were unable to top their rivals from earning a well deserved series
victory.
"You don't like to see that with either team, but those things happen," Leyland said of a game featuring three ejections. "It was a great matchup. Haren was terrific, and so was Justin. We expected the runs to be scarce, and obviously they were."
The Tigers kept pushing for a victory as they clinched a narrow 5-4 victory in the final game of the series. With momentum on their side, they were completely unstoppable in the opening two games of their series against the Kansas City Royals. Displaying
some high quality baseball throughout the contest, they secured a comfortable 3-1 series victory.
Detroit’s continued to produce decent performances in games against Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics claiming two wins in five matches. Tigers raised their game to an entirely new level in the series against Minnesota Twins, which they won 3-1. Max
Scherzer continued to impress the critics as he claimed his 11th win in 16 starts. With that triumph, the Tigers also improved their win-loss record to 54-47.
Ending the month on a pretty good note, they managed to get a draw from the series against Los Angeles Angles, after they were trailing 1-2. Tim Leyland lauded his team effort during the 30 day period and he aimed to give even better results in their future
games. It will be fair to say that the month of July proved to be quite a decent one for the Tigers.
