Detroit Tigers: Regular Season Results – MLB May 2011
Similar to the month of April, Detroit Tigers gave impressive results in the month of May 2011. Despite losing their first two games against Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, they bounced back strongly to register their series victory of the month
with three straight wins against the Yankees.
Leading the series 2-1 against the Yankees, the Tigers looked on top of their game in the final match up of the series. Rick Porcello allowed only two runs and eight hits in seven innings to let his side establish complete control over the contest. Defeating
a side of the Yankees’ calibre, the Tigers seemed to be on track for a very strong run in the American League Championships.
"To take three out of four from a team like that is a big lift," Porcello said. "Especially off the two series we were coming off of. We needed these games, for sure."
In their next series against Toronto Blue Jays, the Tigers came back from 0-1 down to register another series victory. With the win, they also improved their win-loss record in the regular season to 18-18. Tigers made a shaky 4-7 start to the series but
with every passing game, they improved their play significantly. Crushing the Blue Jays 10-5 in game four of the series, the Tigers put themselves in a very decent position in the Wild Card standings. Max Scherzer won for the sixth straight time.
Tigers continued to impress the critics with some consistent performances. Crushing the Minnesota Twins 2-0 in a two match series, they seemed to be getting better with each passing game. With another series win over Kansas City Royals, they improved their
win-loss record even better at 22-18.
"It wasn't like we knocked the ball around," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Sometimes you win with the longball and the gapper, and sometimes you win other ways."
After doing all the hard work to put them in a great position, the Tigers let the opportunities pass by in their next few games. Losing to Boston Red Sox 2-0 in the series, they were unable to execute their game plan. After losing five straight games, they
managed to restore some of the lost pride in their series against Tampa Bay Rays.
Tigers ended the month a on a high note as well as they swept Minnesota Twins for the second time in two weeks. Manager Tim Leyland expressed his happiness over his team’s effort and he aimed to produce similar performances in the upcoming games as well.
Detroit Tigers had an impressive 28-26 win-loss record by the end of May 2011. The team came together and started to put decent performances in their match-ups.
