Detroit Tigers’ Ryan Perry unfortunate to concede historical walk-off Grand Slam – MLB Update
After the Detroit Tigers worked hard to push Game 2 of the American League Championship Series into extra innings, Ryan Perry conceded a walk-off Grand Slam in the 11th inning to lose the game for Detroit Tigers and subsequently give the Texas
Rangers a two-game lead in the seven-game series on Monday, October 10.
With scores level at 3-3 and bases loaded in the 11th inning, Nelson Cruz unleashed his arms to smash the first walk-off Grand Slam in the history of playoffs and as a result, win the game 7-3 for Texas at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Cruz could not impress in the regular season, but has emerged strongly in the postseason and especially in the AL Championship Series. The right-handed slugger has already slammed three home-runs in six games during the playoffs and is currently slugging
at a percentage of .682. Although his batting average remains to be on the lower side, he has produced six RBIs thus far and is promising to further inflate this number.
In his four at-bats during Game 2, Cruz connected thrice and drove in five runs in addition to scoring two. He first hammered Max Scherzer for a solo home-run towards left-field in the seventh inning to bring the game back in balance before smacking a historical
Grand Slam in the same direction to seal the game.
Cruz became the first player since 2006 to have a multi home-run game in the ALCS, one of which is a walk-off homer. The last player to do so was Magglio Ordonez for the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 of the 2006 ALCS.
Prior to Cruz’s Grand Slam, Andy Dirks dropped a fly ball in the right-field, allowing the Rangers to load bases. However, he did not express disappointment on his failure and said, "You've just got to keep battling every at-bat. Sometimes you're going to
produce a run here or there and they're all big. You've just got to keep fighting."
Dirks was brought in as pinch hitter for Brandon Inge, but failed on the offensive front as well. He went 0-for-2 to convince the manager that he might not be a suitable pick for the remaining games in the series.
