Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander wins American League Cy Young Award – MLB News
Finally the Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander got what he truly deserves as he won the American League Cy Young award with unanimous vote on Tuesday and smoothed his way to potentially winning the 2011 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
This huge appreciation of Verlander’s talent was certainly a one step forward in his successful career especially in this year as he emerged as new dominant power on the baseball field. Going 24-5 (win loss) in 2011 including a 2.40 earned run average and
250 strike-outs made him eligible to win precious Cy Young that is symbol of excellence in pitching.
On winning this award, Verlander said, “I worked extremely hard for this and you know how competitive I am, Looking at big picture, it would be nice to win (the MVP). Right now, I have to be excited where I’m at. I just want to take this in and enjoy it
with family and friends.”
This award is an another achievement for the 28-year-old as he becomes the third Tiger to win the Cy Young after Guillermo Hernandez (1984) and Denny McLain won in1969. Verlander’s tremendous pitching skills outdid everyone else in the AL in ERA average
and strike-outs. The most memorable moment came in Verlander’s career in this past season when he pitched his second no-hit game against the Toronto Blue Jays in May and later helped the Detroit Tigers to win their first Division title since 1987.
His season long persistent performances are now giving him true appreciation with every major award and now he is looking ahead to become the first pitcher to win the MVP award since 1992 when Dennis Eckersley repeated history of Hernandez to win both Cy
Young and MVP Awards.
The next few days will be crucial to determine how close Justin Verlander is to grabbing this year’s MVP Award but for the moment, he is happy to win the Cy Young for a brilliant season. Verlander was honoured with the coveted Cy Young Award due to his tremendous
pitching performance during the year. He certainly deserves all the accolades give to him.
