Detroit Tigers and Torii Hunter a perfect match – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ owner Mike Ilitch will be extremely pleased to know he has found the right match for his team in free agency. The Tigers signed on former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter for a two year $26 million contract and it seems they are
perfect for each other.
In an introductory news conference at Comerica Park last week, Ilitch explained the way Hunter came flying in the door of his office. General Manager Dave Dombrowski, Ilitch and Hunter all had a big smile on their faces after making an official announcement
on Friday evening. The Tigers are now expecting Hunter to be become the final piece to a championship puzzle.
"It's just one of those situations where (it felt like), 'I've known this guy for 20 years,'" Ilitch said in an interview. "You get people like that where, right away, you're comfortable. I guess that happens in the dating world, right?"
"The thing that impressed me in that time we spent together is he cares about everybody," Ilitch further added. "He cares about poor people. The first thing we started talking about was the conditions in Detroit, and he wants to help."
In an interview with a leading sports website, Ilitch stated that no one in all his years as a professional sports owner has made this quick of an impression as Hunter. For the Tigers, Hunter was the Number one choice as soon as the regular season ended.
Hunter, on the other hand, looked at Detroit as the best landing spot for himself.
With one of the richest and accomplished clubs in Major League Baseball, Hunter will have the opportunity to win the World Series title, something he has not been able to achieve in his 15 year MLB career.
Hunter had an excellent time on the plate last season as he hit .313 with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s. In addition to his remarkable hitting abilities, the guy can help the Tigers improve their defence significantly. It will be interesting to see if he can
keep up the good work to post another successful MLB season.
