Detroit Tigers annihilate New York Yankees 8-1 to take ALCS title – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers put up a powerful show as they beat the New York Yankees 8-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, October 18 in Game 4 of American League Championship series.
The pitching domination continued into the fourth game. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer had one of the best nights of his post-season career as he struck-out ten batters, allowing just two hits and one run in five plus sharp innings.
Scherzer’s control over his fastballs and sliders was remarkable. His composure was excellent. He knew the Yankees were under pressure. Therefore, he adopted a very aggressive approach. Relief pitchers Drew Smyly, Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke also made useful
contributions as the Tigers restricted Yankees to just one run.
For the second straight time, Delmon Young drove in Tigers’ first run, earning an RBI single to right in the first inning. Reaching on infield single to shortstop, designated hitter Avisail Garcia doubled Tigers’ lead to 2-0 in the third inning.
Then it the time was Triple Crown Winner Miguel Cabrera to demonstrate his skills. After taking a deep breath, Cabrera smacked a two run home-run to give his side complete control of the situation. Jhonny Peralta and Austin Jackson combined to hit three
home-runs to take the score beyond Yankees’ reach.
"Yeah, we did it," Cabrera said. "It's an unbelievable feeling. ... Four more wins, guys. Four more wins."
"I just reminded everybody when we took our punches all year, 'You know what? Let's just wait till the end, and then if we have underachieved, I will be the first one to admit it," Leyland said. "So hopefully we've quieted some doubters now. The guys just
stepped it up when we had to. We caught a couple breaks when the White Sox couldn't win a couple of games they needed to win."
Manager Jim Leyland looked delighted at the end of the contest. Of course, it means a lot to him. The Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers in last year’s American League Championship Series and they wanted to show the World they are capable of doing even better.
If the Tigers can win any four of their next seven games, they will also end their 28-year World Series title wait.
