Detroit Tigers annihilated by Colorado Rockies 4-12 in series opener – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were humiliated by Colorado Rockies 4-12 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Friday, June 15 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The uncanny Tigers once again failed to control their nerves under pressure and the Rockies took complete advantage of the situation to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the sixth inning, the Tigers had an excellent chance to secure a memorable win at Comerica Park but the Rockies displayed some top quality hitting skills in the tenth innings to demoralise the Tigers.
It will be interesting to see if the 2012 American League Central Division title winners can come up with a better game plan in the second game to keep the series alive.
"I'm a little disappointed," Leyland said. "We could've and should've scored more, but we didn't."
"Everyone talks about home runs and doubles, but it was a little bunt that caused us all kind of chaos," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
"It's great to get that stigma off our back," Rockies' manager Jim Tracy said. "This is really good for our club."
"This was huge for me and for our team," Jeff Francis said. "It's a step in the right direction for me, but it is more important that we got a win. It's been a tough stretch and we needed this."
In a game that was played on an extremely competitive, the Tigers showed some great quality team work skills. With the Rockies leading the score 2-0 in the third inning, Austin Jackson doubled to deep left to score the first run for his team. Miguel Cabrera also made his presence felt as he doubled to left in the third to level score 3-3.
Prince Fielder had an RBI single to centre in the third Brennan Boesch grounded out to first in the sixth to keep the Tigers in the game. Rookie Colby Crosby had the worst night of his short big league career as he allowed four runs and six hits in just over three inning. Colorado Rockies scored six in the extra inning, setting a new record in club’s history.
