Detroit Tigers annihilated by Los Angeles Angels 0-13 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were comprehensively humiliated by the Los Angeles Angels 0-13 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, July 17 in the second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Angels gave the Tigers a taste of their own medicine as they stacked a mammoth 13 runs on the board. It was a display of unbelievable hitting as the offence belted home-runs all over the ballpark.
Albert Pujols clinched a decisive single to shallow left in the first inning to provide his team with the momentum but it was Mark Trumbo who forced the Tigers to make critical mistakes.
The left fielder connected for a three run shot in the first inning to put the Angels in a strong 4-0 position.
Mike Trout, who is having a fantastic rookie season, raised his average to .355 with a home-run in the second to put the opposition under immense pressure.
"My mom lived in Michigan. She was a big fan of him growing up," Trout said. "That was pretty neat meeting him."
Pujols also joined the party soon and he belted a home-run to left in the second. For the Tigers, no one really took responsibility.
Jim Leyland was shocked to see his offence going down like ninepins. The skipper will be now thinking of ways to build up his team’s confidence.
Jacob Turner, who came in as a replacement for Drew Smyly was no way near as good as his team-mate. Tigers’ starting pitcher took a real pounding, giving up six hits and seven runs in just two innings.
"Jacob is a potential top-of-the-rotation guy who just needs more seasoning," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I still expect to see him high in a rotation someday, but he's not ready yet."
Tigers’ relief pitchers also paid the ultimate price for their inconsistency. Duane Below conceded four runs in just over three innings whereas Darin Downs allowed two runs and three hits in his two innings.
The Angels will be happy with their tremendous performance as they managed to humiliate the mighty Tigers with their shut-out performance. It will be interesting to see how far the Angels can carry their winning momentum forward in the series.
