Detroit Tigers avoid series sweep as they defeat San Francisco Giants 6-3 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers managed to earn their first win in the rubber game of the three-game interleague series against the defending World Series champions San Francisco Giants 6-3 at the Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday, July 3.
After getting humiliating defeats in first two games of the series, the Tigers’ batting and their pitching depth both struck back at the same time to escape their first interleague and eighth overall sweep in this season. In this game, the Tigers went under
a 1-0 deficit in the top of the fourth inning but this time they immediately retaliated and readily removed it in the bottom of the inning.
At the top, Brandon Crawford of the Giants played an RBI single while in the bottom Brennan Boesch launched a hard hitting 352-feet long straight homer to tie the game at 1-all. The Giants again widened the lead this time to 3-1 with the help of an RBI single
each by Aubrey Huff and Cody Ross in the top of the fifth inning.
Tigers struggled in the bottom of this inning against the Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong, who until now has given just one run. However, the Tigers started their journey when Miguel Cabrera made an RBI single to reduce the lead to 3-2. Then in the next inning,
Magglio Ordonez drove in an RBI double and Brandon Inge added insult to injury with his line drive double to take it to 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Their reliever Joaquin Benoit, then went a scoreless eighth inning followed by a perfect ninth inning by closer Jose Valverde. Benoit held his tenth game, Valverde saved his 20th game while their starter Rick Porcello, who gave just three runs
on five hits, walked two and struck-out six batters, won his seventh game of the season.
Vogelsong, who has a 6-1 record with a 2.13 ERA this season, went for three runs on four hits and allowed four walks on just over six innings. He also got five strike-outs but could not convert his record to 7-1 due to some wobbly performance from his relievers.
Jeff Affeldt tossed just ten pitches and allowed one RBI run while Santiago Casilla gave away two runs on two hits in the eighth inning. It restricted the Giants from another series sweep.
Despite winning this game and avoiding their series sweep, the Tigers now have a strong competitor to face. The Los Angeles Angels has taken two consecutive wins to earn their 2-1 series over the Los Angeles Dodgers and this performance will certainly make
some trouble for the struggling Tigers squad.
