Detroit Tigers beat Boston Red Sox 7-5 in series finale – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers outclassed the Boston Red Sox 7-5 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, August 1 to grab a much needed victory.
Credit should be given to the Tigers for showing great composure and determination throughout the series. After losing 3-7 in the series opener, they needed to fight back to retain their second place on American League Central Division standings and that
is exactly what they did on Wednesday to improve to 55-50.
After the Red Sox took an early 1-0 lead, Brennan Boesch earned an RBI single to centre in the fourth inning to bring Detroit back into the contest. Austin Jackson and rookie Quintin Berry drove crucial runs in the fifth to extend Tigers’ lead to 3-1.
All Star Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder homered in the fifth to help the Tigers take complete control of the situation. Delmon Young’s home-run in the eighth innings won for just the second time in seven games.
"Those guys are awfully good right in the middle. They're pretty good at what they do and they did what they do tonight," Leyland said in a post game interview. "When we get rolling pretty good that's a good three-four combination, probably as good as anybody
in baseball. They're fun to watch."
"We're one of the top teams hitting in the American League. I don't know why people talk about our hitting," Cabrera said. "We're one of the top teams hitting. I guess we need to just win some more games, that's it."
Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely happy with his team’s efforts against the Red Sox but the Tigers will be looking to bring more consistency in their game-play to replace Chicago White Sox at the top of league standings table.
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello gave up eight hits and four runs in just over five innings but he was lucky to end up with his eighth win of the season. Relief pitcher Jose Valverde pitched with great control and accuracy for his 21st save of the
season. He struck-out two in the ninth to hold off Bobby Valentine and his men.
