Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland Indians 7-5 in finale – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers showed great determination, fighting spirit and temperament as they beat Cleveland Indians 7-5 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, June 7 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Jim Leyland will be very pleased to see the Tigers putting up a strong show on Thursday evening to avoid sweep at the hands of their American League Central Division rivals. Tigers’ rookie starting pitcher Casey Crosby looked extremely content with first career win.
"It was a good series overall, but seven was just too many for us today," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "We had a couple times where we just needed one more hit."
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera also played his part in deciding the outcome of the clash, hitting a home run in the fourth to help the Tigers take an impassable 7-1 lead. Brennan Boesch, who was having forgettable time at the plate for the last couple of weeks, finally broke out of a slump with two hits and the Tigers beat the Indians to salvage some of the lost pride.
Crosby pitched effectively into the sixth for his first Major League victory. Allowing just three runs and five hits, he made the most of available opportunities. Crosby replaced injured Doug Fister earlier this week and he will be looking to continue his impressive form to cement his place on Tiers’ big league roster.
"There's a lot of things going on in your debut. You've got family, you've got friends, you've got people congratulating you all the time," Crosby said. "This was a lot better. I knew it was going to happen, I knew what I was going to expect going into this start so it was definitely a positive thing."
First baseman Prince Fielder also had a decent outing. He single to centre in the first inning and scored on Derek Lowe’s wild pitch. Delmon Young and Don Kelly hit RBI singles to help Tigers build a 4-0 lead in the first inning.  Jose Valverde tossed up a perfect ninth for his 10th save of the season.
