Detroit Tigers beat Houston Astros 7-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers secured a deserving 7-3 win against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas on Thursday, May 2 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers dominated the Astros in almost all aspects of the game in an important American League encounter. Tigers were looking to continue the good work in the series opener to earn a 1-0 series lead and that is exactly what they did. Coming back from behind,
the Tigers secured a thrilling win on Thursday to start the series on a winning note.
Tigers’ Manager Kim Leyland will be extremely delighted with the outcome of the game. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Tigers have some of the best pitching and hitting talent in their squad but for some weird reason they have not been able to convert their
talent into consistent results. Their win against the Astros improved their win loss record to 16-11 and it will be interesting to see if the Tigers can continue their good work to claim the top spot on the American League Central Division standings table.
"Those are the opportunities that you want," outfielder Don Kelly said. "If I'm managing in the other dugout, I'm walking Miggy and Prince, too."
"That's a smart move," he added.
"We got quite a few hits and we weren't doing much with them for a while but we finally broke loose and got some big ones," manager Jim Leyland said of his team's 15 hits. "Donnie, that's his third big hit off left-handers recently, so that's a good thing
to see. We stranded a lot of guys but we hung in there and got a couple of big ones finally."
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello showed the stuff he is capable of as he allowed just five hits and three runs in a high scoring contest. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Tigers were in a strong position. Relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit,
Darwin Downs and Luke Putkonen also made useful contributions on the mound. Putkonen grabbed his first win of the season after he pitched 2.1 perfect innings of relief.
