Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City Royals 3-2 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers fought back superbly against the Kansas City Royals as they secured a narrow 3-2 win against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, June 11 in Game 2 of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely happy with the outcome of the clash. Tigers were outclassed by the Royals in finer details of the game in the opener but they held their nerves under pressure in Game 2 to stay alive in the series. A lot of credit should be given to the pitching rotation for executing the game plan to perfection.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer continued his heroic form as he allowed just three hits and two runs in seven solid innings to grab his second straight win of the season. Striking out batters at regular intervals, Scherzer played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. It was Scherzer’s ninth win of the season and it will be interesting to see if he can continue the good work to claim his first ever American League Most Valuable Player Award.
“It's nice,” Scherzer said. “Don't get me wrong -- I love being 9-0, but it's more important that we won. For me, it's all about going out there and pitching deep into the game and effective. If we score in the ninth, I don't get the win. It's kind of fluky sometimes that stat can relate to pitching. The way I look at success is how well I pitch.”
“He deserves it,” Kelly said. “He's been throwing the ball really well. It started last year. He really turned it on and carried it over to this year. He's throwing all of his pitches for strikes, getting ahead of guys. He's tough to hit.”
Relief pitchers Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde also made valuable contributions as they combined to pitched two scoreless inning of relief to help their side hold on to a slim lead. Don Kelly provided his team with an excellent start as he singled to left in the second inning to break the deadlock. Victor Martinez drove in the tie breaking run in the eighth inning.
