Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City Royals 5-4 in thriller – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers had continued their superb winning streak as they edged past the Kansas City Royals 5-4 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, September 27 in the finale of their three match series.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Doug Fister had a great time on the mound as he gave up just five hits and three runs in seven plus innings to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Striking-out ten batters, he created all sorts of problems for the
Royals’ batting line-up. Relief pitchers Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke combined to give one hit in 1.1 innings.
Fister has looked in terrific form since returning from the Disabled List and it will be interesting to see if can continue his good work in the upcoming games to help Tigers make it to the playoffs.
Prince Fielder had a great time on the plate as he singled to left in the first inning to put his side on the board. Delmon Young also made his presence felt as he hit a sacrifice fly to right to double Detroit’s lead 2-0.
"Getting a win is big," Avila said. "We have to be able to win tight games like this.”
"Honestly, I had no idea," Fister said. "(Fielder) was yelling at me to step off during the inning, and I kind of looked at him. Normally, he'll do that, to slow me down, if I'm getting too quick. ... I thought that was kind of what he was doing there. He
just said, `Hey, step off.' I look at him, and he kept looking at me, and he said, `Aw, I'll tell you later.’"
Rookie Quintin Berry continued to impress the skipper as he tripled to right in the second inning to give Tigers a handsome 4-0 lead. Royals fought back strongly to level the score 4-4 in the ninth but the Tigers were determined to complete the series sweep.
Alex Avila displayed some top quality hitting skills under pressure, earning an RBI groundout to first in the bottom of the ninth to break the tie as Tigers claimed an emphatic victory over their American League Central Division rivals.
