Detroit Tigers beat Oakland Athletics 3-1 - MLB Update
Detroit Tigers finally ended up on the winning side as they beat Oakland Athletics 3-1 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Sunday, May 13 in the finale of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski will be extremely disheartened by the fact the Tigers have won only half of their games so far this season. There were plenty of hopes from the Tigers before the start of the season with some fans expecting
them to be unbeatable force but that has not turned out to be the case as yet with Detroit humiliated by the likes of Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers in the last month.
There is no denying the fact the Tigers are one of the most powerful teams in the American League but despite having all the firepower and strength in their offensive and defensive play, they have not been able to deliver results on regular basis. The winners
of 2011 American League Central Division title, Detroit Tigers will be looking to learn their lessons to bounce back strongly after the All Star Break.
Pitching Coach Jeff Jones would have loved what he saw from Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander on Sunday evening. The reigning AL Most Valuable Player Award winner, Verlander struck out eight batters to win his fourth straight start this season.
"I really don't know what happened. It's kind of been happening for me all season long and I've been trying to deal with it and figure it out," he said. "Obviously I want to go back, but the risk-reward, seventh inning ... there's no point in going out there
and risking it and maybe something serious happens. If I could, I would."
"He's an ace for a reason," Oakland's Daric Barton said. "You think one thing and get something else. Sometimes you even get the pitch you're looking for and still can't do anything with it."
Miguel Cabrera, Austin Jackson, Ryan Raburn and Brennan Boesch also made the most of available scoring opportunities to put the Tigers in a commanding position.
