Detroit Tigers beat Philadelphia Phillies 10-6 – MLB Spring Training
Detroit Tigers annihilated the Philadelphia Phillies 10-6 at Bright House Networks in Clearwater, Florida on March 13 in an important Grape Fruit League encounter of the 2013 Spring Training.
Detroit Tigers started the contest on a very aggressive note and they continued to dominate their opponent right until the end. Credit should be given to the batting line up that produced a fine performance under pressure. Phillies have some of the finest
pitchers in their pitching rotation but none of them seemed to have an answer to the Tigers’ onslaught.
Outfielder Quintin Berry and Brennan Boesch made their presence felt big time as they created all sorts of problems for the Phillies’s pitchers. Catcher Alex Avilla also had a great time on the plate as he drove in two runs with two hits. Designated hitter
Brayan Pena, second baseman Ramon Santiago and first baseman Don Kelly also made valuable contributions to help the Tigers post a huge total on the board.
Phillies put a great fight to their credit but the night belonged to the Tigers who held their nerve under pressure to secure another superb victory. Tigers’ starting pitcher Drew Smyly posted another solid performance as he allowed just three runs in three
plus innings. It will not be wrong to say that he completely outpitched his counterpart from Philadelphia.
Manager Jim Leyland will be proud of his team’s performance. Tigers started Spring Training on a very slow note but the pieces of the puzzle have come together in the last few games; a very good sign for one of the favourites to win this season. The team
is looking very strong before the regular season begins.
Tigers dominated the American League Central Division last season. The Chicago White Sox gave them a tough time but when it mattered the most the Tigers ran away with the show. With more depth and variety in both their batting line-up and pitching rotation,
the Tigers are looking more dangerous than ever before. It will be interesting to see if Leyland and his men can carry over this momentum into the regular season to finally win the World Series title after almost three decades.
