Detroit Tigers beat Seattle Mariners 2-1 - MLB News
Detroit Tigers continued their excellent winning streak as they secured a narrow 2-1 win against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, April 17 in Game 2 of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Tigers dominated the Mariners right from the start of the contest. The pitching rotation was absolutely dominants. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer led from the front as he created all sorts of problems for the Mariners’ batting lineup. Allowing just six hits
and one run in eight solid innings, Scherzer played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he did not let the opposition settle down.
After both teams failed to score run early on, Jhonny Peralta grounded out to shortstop in the fifth inning to give Tigers a 1-0 lead. Brayan Pena drove in the tie breaking single in the 14th.
"I thought the game was tied," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said about Ackley's double. "And I also thought the third-base coach made a great call. We have to execute it."
"I got dizzy," Pena said. "I think he hit me in the chin as he was running toward me. I wanted [the umpire] to see it because I don't know his view."
"It was a great game. Both sides," Hernandez said. "Scherzer was pretty good, too. He was changing speeds, he was throwing breaking balls. I was just trying to match it up. I was trying to be aggressive."
Relief pitchers Octavio Dotel, Phil Coke, Brayan Villarreal, Darwin Downs, Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit also made valuable contributions as they combined to pitch six scoreless innings, helping the Tigers prevail in a thrilling encounter. Smyly grabbed
his first win of the season after he managed to hold his nerves under immense pressure.
Benoit pitched the scoreless fourteenth inning to help the Tigers take an impassable 2-0 series lead. With their win the Tigers improved their win loss record to 9-5 and it will be interesting to see if Jim Leyland and his men can continue the food work
throughout this season to win their third straight American League Central Division title.
