Detroit Tigers beaten by Cleveland Indians 2-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were defeated by the Cleveland Indians 2-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Monday, September 3 in the opening game of their three match series.
Indians should be given credit for the way they handled pressure situations during the contest. Starting pitcher Corey Kluber produced an outstanding performance as he gave up just two runs on six hits in six solid innings for his first win of the season.
Kluber used his fastballs and sliders very effectively, looking very confident on the mound. Surely, he will be looking to give similar results on his next appearance to cement his place on Indians’ big league roster.
Relief pitchers Cody Allen, Esmil Rogers and Vinnie Pestano combined to pitch three scoreless innings to help Indians complete a deserving victory.
Tigers’ starter Anibal Sanchez also had a great time on the mound, allowing just two runs in six innings to leave the match in the balance. Relief pitcher Darin Downs took the loss after giving up two hits and a run in 0.1 innings.
Second baseman Jason Kipnis provided Indians with a perfect start as he scored on a passed ball by Alex Avila to put his side on the board.
"That's one that people think gets monotonous in spring training because you work on that every single day," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said in a post game interview. "But it takes repetition to get it done right, and Jason Kipnis deserves a lot of credit.
That was a tremendous play."
"I was running like heck with my head down so I couldn't really tell," Avila said. "When I looked up, going at the bag, I saw Pestano covering and he made a good play."
Delmon Young brought the Tigers back into the contest with an RBI single to shallow right as the match entered a very exciting phase. Jhonny Peralta earned an RBI single to deep left in the fourth to keep Detroit in the game but the Indians were too hot
to handle on Monday. Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two crucial runs to help his team take a 1-0 series lead.
