Detroit Tigers beaten by Cleveland Indians 2-3 at Progressive Field – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were beaten by the Cleveland Indians 2-3 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, July 24 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
For the Indians, Carlos Santana had another decent outing as he singled to right in the fourth inning to double his teams’ advantage 2-0. Tigers’ Third baseman Miguel Cabrera homered to centre in the seventh and Quintin Berry scored to level the score 2-2
and the match entered a very interesting phase.
Left-fielder Aaron Cunningham drove in the tie breaking run in the seventh inning to help Cleveland secure a memorable win. Tigers’ starting pitcher Doug Fister had a decent time on the mound. Fister gave up three runs in seven innings while striking-out
four but the Tigers were unable to cross the winning line.
"I'll do anything I can for this team because they've treated me great all year," he said. "If I had gotten a few more hits, they would have given me more playing time. It's great to get this big win and we'll just have to see what happens from here."
"It was like my big truck was sitting on top of me and somebody lifted it off," said Indians’ relief pitcher Joe Smith, who was hit for a two run home run in the seventh. "This was a total team win. The guys bounced right back after I messed up."
Winners of 2011 American League Central Division, Detroit Tigers will be disappointed with the outcome of the game. Coming fresh from their triumph against the Chicago White Sox, the Tigers were looking to continue their impressive winning streak to consolidate
their position at the top of AL Central Division standings but Cleveland had other ideas.
Credit should be given to the Indians who handled their nerves brilliantly to come out on top. Tigers, on the other hand, failed to respond under pressure and they paid the ultimate price. It will be exciting to see if Leyland and his men can bounce back
in the next game to avoid losing their first place on the league standings.
The Indians will be happy with their performance as they managed to get their offence going and put in a good victory against the Tigers.
