Detroit Tigers beaten by Minnesota Twins 3-4 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were beaten by Minnesota Twins 3-4 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, May 17 in the second game of their two match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Tigers were hoping to make a strong start to the contest after allowing 19 runs in their previous two games against the Twins and Chicago White Sox but starting pitcher Doug Fister looked uncomfortable on the mound right from the beginning. Twins’ lead
hitter hit a towering home run off the right handed pitcher to dent Detroit’s confidence levels.
Fister will have to train hard to correct the flaws in his throwing technique. He allowed four runs including three earned on nine hits in six innings. His counterpart from the Twins, P.J. Walters also looked in trouble as he gave up four hits including
three solo home runs.
"I don't like to give up home runs, but the offense gave me a little room to work with there, so it didn't hurt us," Walters said.
The Twins had 4-0 lead in fifth, thanks to Justin Morneau who drove in crucial runs but the Tigers fought back superbly in the fifth and the sixth to reduce the deficit to 3-4. However, the Twins held on to their minor advantage to earn their 12th win
of the season.
"The only thing that has been consistent for this team is the inconsistency, and that's mind boggling to me," Leyland said. "We just aren't putting together the combinations that we need to win."
"Him driving the ball the other way is huge," Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He starts getting a little pull happy at times, and if he's staying on the ball like that and gets the barrel on it."
Jim Leyland and company will be very frustrated with their performances over the last few weeks. After making a decent start to the season, the 2011 American League Central Division champions were expected to get better with each passing game but that has
not turned out to be the case with Tigers losing majority of their series’ in this month.
