Detroit Tigers beaten by Pittsburgh Pirates 0-1 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers took another embarrassing 0-1 defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday, May 30 in the finale of their two match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers will be extremely disappointed with the outcome of the clash. Despite putting up a brave fight, Jim Leyland and his men were unable to find winning ways. A lot of credit should also be given to the Pirates for executing their game plan to perfection
in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note.
Pirates edged past the Tigers in the series opener as well and with momentum on their side, they continued the good work on Wednesday to secure a deserving series sweep.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be disappointed with the outcome of the clash. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can learn from their mistakes to turn things around in their next series.
“You've got to believe you can do it,” Martin said. “If you think you're going to fail then you're probably going to fail. It's all a matter of having a positive attitude and believing in yourself. Our whole team is like that right now.”
“The great thing about Russell is he never takes his offense behind the plate,” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. “He struck out his first three times up tonight yet he went right back behind the plate and it was all about the pitcher. That's why it
was so good to see him come through at the end.”
Starting pitcher Doug Fister had a great time on the mound as he allowed just four hits in seven solid innings. Striking out 12 batters, he kept the Tigers in the hunt for most part of the contest. However, despite his best efforts, the Tigers fell short
of their targets. Relief pitchers Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke showed nerves of steel under pressure as they combined to toss up two scoreless inning to force the game into the extra inning but closer Luke Putkonen gave up the tie breaking single to take his
first loss of the year.
