Detroit Tigers beaten by Pittsburgh Pirates 3-4 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers faced yet another humiliating defeat in front of their home crowd as they were beaten by Pittsburgh Pirates 3-4 a Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, May 19 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski have a lot to worry about these days. The Tigers have looked in terrible form over the last few weeks after making a decent start to the season.
Their recet series’ losses to other teams in the American League have damaged their record to 21-19. The fans also had high expectations from this team considering some of the players the Tigers acquired during the offseason.
In Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Brennan Boesch, the Tigers have some of the finest hitters in the American League.
The pitching rotation is also one of the best in the division with the 2011 Most Valuable Players Award winner Justin Verlander leading the attack.
After the Tigers secure a comfortable 6-0 win the opener, it seemed as if they will brush aside the Pirates in the second game,
However, Pittsburg held on to their nerves to clinch a thrilling win and force the series into a decider. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can up their game play in the finale to salvage some of the lost pride.
"I really wouldn't say I had real tough at-bats against Verlander. I had some decent at-bats, but he just got the best of me," Andrew McCutchen said after hitting a pair of home runs against A.J. Burnett. "You just show up tomorrow and get 'em the next day."
"We joke in the dugout, 'Why do you throw this guy a strike?'" Burnett said. "But some pitches he's hitting are good pitches too, so it just shows you what kind of player Cutch is."
Prince Fielder homered to right in the third to level score after the Pirates had taken 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cabrera also made a valiant effort but the Pirates hung on to their slim lead to win the game.
