Detroit Tigers beaten by St. Louis Cardinals 1-3 at Comerica Park – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were beaten by St. Louis Cardinals 1-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, June 20 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Austin Jackson doubled to deep right in the third inning to break the deadlock and score the first run for the Tigers. However, apart from Jackson none of the Tigers’ hitters were able to make a significant contribution.
Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina drove in crucial runs for his team and Daniel Descalso hit a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth to level score 1-1.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello took his fifth loss of the season after allowing two runs and ten hits in seven innings. His counterpart from St. Louis Jake Westbrook gave up only one run in his 14th career complete game.
"I guess the older I get, the better it is to get a little more rest," the 34-year-old Westbrook said.
"It's a great feeling," he added. "Every time you go out there, you want to finish what you start."
"Today was definitely a good step in the right direction, and I want to keep that going," Porcello said. "With this offense, if I can go out and throw seven innings and give up two runs, we're going to win a lot of games. If I can keep doing what I did tonight,
we'll be OK."
Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski will be extremely disappointed with the loss on Wednesday evening.
The Tigers were hoping to hit the .500 win percentage mark by beating Cardinals for the second straight time but that did not turn out to be the case as the offence once again failed to live up to the expectations.
The Tigers have been relying heavily on their bullpen strength since the start of the season. 2011 Most Valuable Players Award winner has helped them win some important games but the batting line up will have to produce more runs to help the Tigers make
it to the playoffs this season. It will be interesting to see if Detroit can use their home conditions more effectively in the finale to win the series.
