Detroit Tigers breathe a sigh of relief as pitching rotation gets boost from rainout in Game 2
The Detroit Tigers do not have much to be content with in their current situation. They are in the American League Championship Series against the Texas Rangers but they have lost two men to injuries. However the club has good news, as rain washed out Game
2 of the American League Championship Series and that brought the club’s pitching rotation back to order.
The recent news out of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington stated that the Tigers will be without Delmon Young and Magglio Ordonez, who recently left the playoffs due to a broken right ankle. The club’s out-field is left with just Ryan Raburn. However the good
news is that Max Scherzer is getting an extra day to prepare for Game 2, while Justin Verlander is back on for Game 5.
Justin Verlander was 24-5 this season with an earned run average of 2.40. He has been unlucky on facing rain two of his three encounters in the post-season. He is 1-1 though, with an earned run average of 5.54. Catcher Alex Avila is proud to have him back
in the mix for Game 5.
"He has had a tremendous year," Avila said. "It is a shame that two games that he's tried to go out there have been postponed by rain or kind of forced him out because of the rain. ... It's something you can't control, so it's kind of hard to be upset about
it."
At the same time, Scherzer who was 15-9 during the regular season with an earned run average of 4.43 is looking to win his second bout of the post-season as a starter.
"My goal is not to sit out here and try to be 50 percent [strength] and try to take the ball," Scherzer said Saturday. "I know I can be 100 percent."
With the pitching rotation back on track, manager Jim Leyland now has to deal with the out-field problem that requires two replacements. The Tigers will be looking to put in a good performance and try to dominate early in the game as rain might wreak havoc
with this crucial series.
