Detroit Tigers can sign another pitcher, Dave Dombrowski – MLB News
Detroit Tigers General Manager, Dave Dombrowski has made some crucial moves this off season to strengthen Tigers’ pitching lineup. However, It seems as if the Tigers are still looking to sign new pitchers before the start of 2012 spring training session. According to a leading sports website, Dombrowski stated that the Tigers may sign another veteran pitching presence to spring training, which starts on February 20.
Dombrowski stated that the Tigers can still sign a pitcher or two to add more variety to their pitching unit. The GM further added that the club was in talks with some of the players’ agents and if the Tigers fail to find the right pitching option, they will go into spring training with the people they have.
"We may still sign a guy or two. We'll just wait and see. We've talked to people, but we've not had any success in that regard. The closer we get (to spring training), unless something happens, we'll just go with the people we have. There's still plenty of time to add someone if people don't perform up to the capabilities we think they can," Dombrowski said.
"I've talked to more clubs than I usually do at this time of year," he added. "At this point I don't anticipate doing anything, but I'm not going to say I'm not going to."
Tigers’ biggest asset in pitching department will be Justin Verlander. The right handed flame throwing pitcher was absolutely sensational last season as he reached his 1000 career strike-outs mark. With a record 24 wins, he helped the Tigers win the American League Central title. For his consistent and match winning performances, Verlander was named the WXYZ Newsmakers of the Year Award a few days ago.
Looking in great shape, Verlander can play an important role to help the Tigers achieve their desired results in 2012. Dombrowski explained if the players don’t live up to the expectations, the management may decide to bring in some fresh faces during the regular season. The Tigers can also sign on Yoenis Cespedes, who has been granted free-agent status. Cespedes may not see the Tigers as his immediate destination but he hasn’t declared himself completely out of it.
