Detroit Tigers clinch narrow 6-5 win against New York Yankees – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers produced another masterful performance as they secured a narrow 6-5 win over the New York Yankees at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, August 7 in second game of their four match series.
Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely happy with Tigers’ effort against the American League East Division leaders. Tigers had the better of New York in series opener as well and they continued their excellent work on Tuesday to take a crucial 2-0 series
lead.
"We're doing exactly what we want to do," catcher Alex Avila said in a post game interview. "We can taste the playoffs, and we want them."
Reliever Jose Valverde held his nerves to hold off the Yankees in the ninth, earning his 22nd save of the year. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello had an extraordinary outing as he created all sorts of problems for the Yankees’ hitting line-up.
Using his sliders, fastball and curveballs extremely efficiently, Porcello grabbed his ninth win of the season. In his 6.2 innings, he gave up just three runs to lower his ERA to 4.62. His counterpart from New York, Phil Hughes struggled to strike-out the
Tigers as he allowed four runs on eight hits in just over four innings.
For Tigers, Miguel Cabrera had another excellent night as he homered to left in the fourth to put his side on the board. Jhonny Peralta, Cabrera and Andy Dirks made the most of scoring opportunities in the fifth and the sixth to give Tigers a handsome 5-2
lead.
"I think we won the game with that at-bat," Manager Leyland said of Brennan Boesch hit in the fourth inning. "I don't know how many pitches it was, but it got Hughes' pitch count from nothing to something, and that was the key to the game."
"I've never seen anything like him," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "I've been in this game for 50 years, and I've never seen opposite-field power like Miguel Cabrera. Never. Anybody."
Ichiro Suzuki led New York’s fight back in closing stages of the game but the Tigers held on to complete a deserving victory.
