Detroit Tigers could trade Rick Porcello before Spring Training – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, the Detroit Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski acknowledged that he had received a plenty of phone calls regarding trade for a starting pitcher.
Ever since the Tigers re-signed Anibal Sanchez for a five year $80 million deal, reports have surfaced the Tigers could consider trading one of their starting pitchers as they have a surplus of pitchers with six starters.
The Tigers made an official announcement on Sanchez’s deal on Monday and since then a number of Major League Baseball teams have called up Dombrowski to discuss the possibility of trading one of the starting pitchers.
With Sanchez coming back to Detroit in the next season, the starting rotation will consist of ace Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, Anibal Sanchez, Drew Smyly and Rick Porcello.
In an interview with a leading sports website, Dombrowski had indicated that the Tigers would look to retain Smyly as the No. 5 starting pitcher, which will leave Porcello as the possible trading option.
“It appears Dave Dombrowski has had a phone pretty much connected to his ear in recent days. Ever since reports surfaced late last week the Tigers had re-signed starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez — it officially was announced Monday — teams have been calling
the president and general manager about his surplus of starting pitching. It's a safe bet Sanchez, Justin Verlander, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer aren't going anywhere”, said Ted Kulfan of detroitnews.com.
"We'll just see what happens," Dombrowski said. "We're not going to do anything just to do something. If we can rectify that situation in a good fashion, that is something we'd contemplate."
Additionally, considering Porcello’s age (23), his MLB experience and 48 wins in four season, it is easy to see why so many teams have rung up to inquire about him. According to sources, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and the
Texas Rangers are some of the teams linked to Porcello, who went 10-12 with a decent 4.59 ERA last season. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers make the move of trading Porcello before the start of 2013 Spring Training Session.
