Detroit Tigers crash to 8-12 defeat against New York Yankees – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were unable to maintain their excellent form as they crashed to an 8-12 defeat against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, August 8 in third game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball
regular season.
Jim Leyland and company will be extremely frustrated to lose the battle which they could have won. After beating New York in first two games, the Tigers had an outstanding chance to wrap up an impressive series win against the American League East Division
leaders but the Yankees were too hot to handle on Wednesday.
After Yankees took an early 7-0 lead, Leyland and his men regrouped themselves to make a strong comeback. Brennan Boesch, Prince Fielder and debutant Jeff Baker put up solid show to reduce Yankees’ lead to 8-4. Andy Dirks, Alex Avila and Omar Infante also
made valuable contributions but the Tigers failed to score enough runs.
"It's just very coincidental," said Yankees’ centre fielder Curtis Granderson. "I've been with this team for three seasons and I think I've batted every spot but cleanup. It really doesn't matter where I hit. I just want to win."
Tigers’ starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he took his second loss of the season. Anibal, who looked in brilliant form on his last start, gave up seven runs on seven hits in three way-ward innings, allowing
New York to establish complete control over the contest.
Relief pitchers Duane Below, Phil Coke and Brayan Villarreal were also unable to control the flow of runs as the Yankee stacked up a huge total on the board.
"We just didn't pitch and all the add-on runs, obviously, killed us," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said in a post game interview.
C.C. Sabathia, on the other hand, used his fastballs extremely effectively to keep the Tigers on the defensive. Reliever Rafael Soriano pitched the perfect ninth to lift New York to a much needed victory.
