Detroit Tigers crush Cleveland Indians 5-1 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers produced another magical performance as they secured a comfortable 5-1 win against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio in the opening game of the two match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
“He knew that was going to be it for him,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “He really cranked it up. That was pretty impressive. He did a terrific job.”
It was an important win for the Tigers who are looking to find a way to reclaim the top spot on the American League Central Division standings table. Cleveland Indians, Tigers’ American League Central rivals, have looked in top form this season with 26 wins
from 44 games. Despite having some of the finest hitting pitching talent in their squad, the Tigers have struggled to give consistent results. It will be interesting to see if Jim Leyland and his men can learn from their mistakes to sweep the Indians and snatch
the top position on the league standings table.
“That was a dominant performance,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “His last pitch was 98, and when you're up around 115 or 120 pitches and you have that left in the tank, that's saying a lot.”
Indians, on the other hand, will be a bit disappointed with the outcome of the clash. Surely, they will be looking to give Tigers a taste of their own medicine in the next game. Tiger’s starting pitcher Max Scherzer displayed some top quality pitching skills
as he allowed just two hits and one run in eight solid innings, laying the foundations of an impressive Tigers’ win at Progressive Field. Striking out seven batters, he ensured the Tigers dominated the Indians. Relief pitcher Jose Valverde also had a decent
time on the mound as he allowed just one hit in the scoreless ninth.
“He had his good stuff all the way around from his fastball, a good slider and a good changeup,” Michael Bourn said. “He came out and dominated.”
Andy Dirks and Miguel Cabrera provided the Tigers with a perfect start as they smacked back to back home runs in the sixth inning.
