Detroit Tigers crush Kansas City Royals 4-2 at Comerica Park – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers crushed Kansas City Royals 4-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Friday, July 6 in the first game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Rookie Quintin Berry continued his excellent hitting form as he tripled to deep-centre in the third inning to put the Tigers 2-0 ahead. Brayan Pena doubled to deep left-centre and Jason Bourgeois singled to centre in the fifth to level the score for Kansas
City as the match entered a very exciting phase.
Delmon Young, once again, showed just how valuable he is for the Tigers as he homered to left in the sixth inning to give the Tigers a decisive 4-2 lead. Starting pitcher Drew Smyly also pitched with great control and accuracy to grab his fourth win of the
season. He struck-out a career high 10 and allowed only two runs in six solid innings.
"Tonight was exceptional, because he's not an overpowering pitcher," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said of Smyly. "But he's got a good feel for pitching, and I like him a lot. I think he has a chance to be an outstanding pitcher in two or three years, and
some people don't think it will take that long."
"It means we've been winning," said Young. "Drew kept us in the ballgame so we didn't have to panic and try to score runs early. Most 22-year-olds are in A-ball or Double-A, and he's in the big leagues, carrying himself like a veteran."
With their win against Kansas City on Friday, the Tigers finally managed to hit the .500 win percentage mark. Credit must be given to the Tigers for giving consistent results over the last couple of weeks.
With six wins in their last 10 games, the Tigers are placed third on the American League Central Division standings, just four games behind the leaders Chicago White Sox.
Manager Jim Leyland will be looking to eliminate the flaws in his tactical game plan during the All Star Break and it will be interesting to see if the Tigers can reach the playoffs for the second straight time this year. The Royals will be looking to improve
their performance during the rest of the series.
