Detroit Tigers crushed by New York Yankees 2-6 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were crushed by New York Yankees 2-6 at the Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Sunday, April 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
"To be honest with you, that was the last thing I wanted to do, but sometimes it doesn't want to work out the way you want to," Leyland said of bringing in Putkonen. "I was hoping (Scherzer) could get through the inning and I could start the kid in an inning."
Yankees took complete advantage of their home conditions as they outplayed their rivals in finer details of the game. The win will be of great importance for them as they improved their win-loss record to 12-9.
Joe Girardi and company made a bright start to the contest. Curtis Granderson had a great time on the plate as he combined with Raul Ibanez and Derek Jeter in the second to score the first run for the Yankees.
Alex Rodriguez earned an infield single in the same inning and Eric Chavez scored the second run for New York. The Tigers fought back well in the fourth as Prince Fielder hit a towering 394 feet home run in the fourth to reduce the deficit to 1-2.
"I didn't see what happened right away," Granderson said.
Granderson continued to play aggressively and he homered in the fourth to help the Yankees extend their lead to 3-1. Miguel Cabrera made great play in the sixth to help Brennan Boesch score but the Yankees ended the game on an extremely strong not with Rodriguez,
Jeter and Adam Jones forcing the Tigers completely out of the contest.
Yankees’ starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia once again produced a very reliable and dependable performance as he tossed up eight sharp innings. "It just feels good to go out there and give those guys a rest," Sabathia said of a bullpen that had pitched more
innings than any other bullpen in the American League. The starter will be looking to continue his good form to help his team make it to the playoffs.
