Detroit Tigers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers put in a brilliant performance to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 at the Comercia Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, June 26.
The astonishing score-line was not-so-impressive by the end of the seventh inning when the Diamondbacks lead the Tigers 2-1. The eighth inning seven-run spree by the Tigers proved to be the difference in the otherwise pitchers’ dominated afternoon.
The short-stop for Tigers, Jhonny Peralta, opened the scoring for the night with a sweetly timed 376-feet home-run. This was the only run scored during the first six innings and the only run that Joe Saunders conceded in his seven innings pitched for the
Diamondbacks. He was impressive with his pitching, completing eight strike-outs for the night at an ERA of 4.14. His season tally stands at 60 now, with his career strike-outs just in sight of half a millennium with six remaining.
The Diamondbacks opened their scoring account in the seventh innings helped by Chris Young and Miguel Montero’s one run each. Brad Penny, the starting pitcher for the Tigers, had not leaked a run before this in the game. Standing at 6ft 4in, the bearded
Penny pitched precisely and conceded just eight hits on his 89 pitches. He pitched for 6.2 innings and managed two strike-outs, recording 42 for the season and a massive 1218 strike-outs in his career spanning for about 11 years. The Diamondbacks still had
a one-run lead and the match was all to play for.
It was the eighth innings which got the Detroit crowd to their feet as they saw the home-team score a flurry of runs in the eighth innings. Their hitters connected with style as seven batters scored. Casper Wells, Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Victor
Martinez, Brennan Boesch, Don Kelly and Jhonny Peralta were all among the scoring. Peralta scored his second run for the afternoon, having scored a home-run in the second inning initially.
It was the pitchers from the Diamondbacks who could not sustain the pressure in the eighth inning as the match approached the end. Their relief pitcher, Aaron Heilman lost his first game of the season. His pitching was wayward, going for two runs in 0.2
innings at an ERA of 6.99. He was replaced by David Hernandez who could not stop the flow either and gave away four runs in only 15 pitches. It was all over for the Diamondbacks after this horrendous performance.
The Tigers’ relief pitcher, Al Alburquerque, was no contrast to his counterparts. He won his fifth game of the season conceding just two hits in 1.1 innings with two strike-outs at an impressive ERA of 1.95.
The Diamondbacks were unfortunate in losing what could have been their game and series win against the Tigers on the road. Nevertheless, they are still 43-36 for the season and need to make sure that they do not let their future performances slip due to
this rare outing.
The Tigers, at 42-36 now, are riding high on confidence now and will be ready to take future challenges head on.
