Detroit Tigers defeat Chicago White Sox 4-3 – MLB Update
The Chicago White Sox could not build up on their initial burst and lost to the Detroit Tigers 4-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, July 17.
The Detroit Tigers held their nerves and took their time to post a solid reply to the initial onslaught by the Chicago White Sox. Their patience and concentration helped them win their 50th game this season. Further to their joy, they are now
five games clear of the .500 winning percentage.
The White Sox made a promising start when they unglued Tigers’ starter Brad Penny for three runs in the second inning. Adam Dunn, Carlos Quentin and Alex Rios contributed to the score for the White Sox. After this stint, the Tigers did well not to lose focus
on the mound and the White Sox could not manage a single run after this.
Penny showed character as he continued to pitch before being replaced after 6.2 innings. The three runs were the only lean part of his spell. Al Alburquerque, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde carried on with the precise pitching and all of them ended their
spells without conceding a hit or a run.
Penny won his seventh game of the season while Alburquerque and Benoit recorded their fourth and 14th holds respectively. Valverde’s perfect last inning pitching earned him his 25th save of the season.
The Tigers posted their first run in the fourth inning helped by Brennan Boesch’s 13th home-run of the season which distanced 406-feet.
Although the White Sox still had a two-run lead, the aggressive intent of the Detroit pitchers was taking a toll on the White Sox bull-pen. Philip Humber had been brilliant at the mound for the White Sox but the sixth inning fiasco ruined it for Humber and
handed him his sixth loss for the season.
Andy Dirks, Magglio Ordonez and Victor Martinez added three-runs for the Tigers in the sixth inning to take an indispensable one-run lead which the White Sox batters could never eliminate.
Although a slight margin in magnitude, the Detroit pitchers made the one extra-run big on the opposition and the White Sox surrendered.
The Chicago White Sox are now 46-49 for the season and are fast improving from a series of slack performances they displayed earlier. After winning this series 2-1, they now need to quickly get their act together and replicate the results more frequently
if they have to end up with a superior result in the second half.
The win brings the Tigers just in sight of the first position in the American League Central Division. Their winning percentage of .526 is just .001 less than Cleveland Indians’ winning percentage of .527. A few more similar composed performances can see
the Tigers through.
