Detroit Tigers defeat Chicago White Sox 6-5 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers won the 22nd of their last 26 games on Wednesday, September 14 beating the Chicago White Sox 6-5 at U.S. Cellular Field.
The win enabled the Tigers to have their most sensational winning streak for over 7 decades now.
It was also the 12th consecutive win for the Detroit Tigers, taking their wins to 87 now. "We hung in there and had a real nice win," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "A really unbelievable win."
Alex Avila hit a homer against Sergio Santos to tie the score for the Detroit Tigers. "We've just been on a roll and able to do it with all aspects of the game," Avila said. "The biggest thing is everybody is contributing, so that's the biggest reason why
we're rolling."
It was Carlos Guillen who completely changed the fate of the game into the favour of the Detroit Tigers. A three-time All-Star, Guillen proved a nightmare for the Chicago White Sox Sergio Santos.
"I'm happier for him than anybody else today," Leyland said. "He's been working like everybody else. He's a proud guy. He's a pro and he knows he hadn't played for 10 days. He wants to show people he's a very capable player. He showed that today."
Carlos Guillen homered in the second inning to give an early lead to the Detroit Tigers. But Brad Penny was soon subject to massive hits by the White Sox offence. First it was Alex Ramirez who homered to take the lead to 2-1 for the White Sox. Then Paul
Konerko whose two-run single to centre gave a 4-1 edge to Chicago by the end of the second inning.
Dylan Axelrod, came down hard on the Tigers’ hitters, barely allowed any opportunity to capitalise. Working with remarkable poise, he went into the sixth inning without allowing any run. But Victor Martinez singled to centre to finally end the run drought.
Jesse Crain then pitched a strong seventh to keep the lead at 5-2 for the White Sox. It was at the top of the ninth inning when Ryan Raburn homered to finally bring back the team in the game while Alex Avila had another homer to right against Chris Sale
to level the score.
Having put an exciting flavour in already joyful game, there were ups and downs for the Detroit Tigers. But as Sergio Santos came to pitch the 10th, Carlos Guillen got a single to score the tiebreaking and game winning score. Jose Valverde pitched
a perfect and shutout inning to end the game with a 6-5 victory for the Detroit Tigers.
Detroit put in a brilliant performance as they dominated the White Sox in this exciting match. Chicago will be looking to improve their performance before their next match-up.
