Detroit Tigers defeat Cleveland Indians 5-4 – MLB Update
Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning on Wednesday, September 28 to help the Detroit Tigers sweep the three-game series, defeating the Cleveland Indians 5-4 at Comerica Park.
Miguel Cabrera also had two hits to add a single and double to have .343 hitting in the current season.
After having won the first two games by big margins, 14-0 in the first and 9-6 in the second, the Tigers came down with a dominant position on the Indians to conclude the series with an excellent victory.
While Cabrera left behind Michael Young of the Texas Rangers coupled with that of Adrian Gonzalez, this was Peralta’s 21st homer of the season. As he scored the tiebreaking homer, Jose Valverde had his 49th save of the season by pitching
a shutout ninth inning.
Rick Porcello of the Detroit Tigers pitched six innings to allow five hits and three runs with a 4.75 ERA compared to that of Zach McAllister whose five innings’ spell brought a run and six hits with a 6.11 ERA.
Ezequiel Carrera scored the first run for the Cleveland Indians in the third inning to give the team a 1-0 lead with McAllister pitching relatively well. Jack Hannahan singled to centre to double the lead while Matt LaPorta scored on an error by Will Betemit
to make it 3-0 by the time third game came to end.
Victor Martinez singled to centre to bring the Indians lead down to 3-1 in the fourth inning while Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta scored a single each in the sixth inning to level the score for the first time in the game.
Miguel Cabrera’s hit brought about a the tiebreaking single for the Tigers but Jack Hannahan hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to level the score again. Much as the game remained tied, Jhonny Peralta hit the tiebreaking homer in the bottom of the eighth
to put the Tigers in charge of the game.
Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth and got his 49th save of his season in as many chances, to wrap up the game with a 5-4 victory for the Detroit Tigers.
