Detroit Tigers defeat Kansas City Royals 6-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers secured a comfortable 6-3 win against Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday, October 1 in the opening game of their three match series.
Tigers’ starting pitcher had another excellent outing as he pitched five solid innings to help his side continue their incredible winning streak. Allowing just four hits and one run while striking-out three batters, Porcello played a key role in deciding
the outcome of the clash.
Relief pitchers Al Alburquerque, Octavio Dotel, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde combined to give just two runs in four sold innings to help Tigers take a 1-0 series lead.
Jhonny Peralta provided Detroit with an excellent start as he homered to left in the fifth inning to break the deadlock and give his side a crucial 1-0 lead. Miguel Cabrera continued his marvellous hitting form as smacked a solo home-run to right in the
sixth inning to double Tigers’ lead 2-0.
Peralta reached second base safely on a throwing error and Gerald Laird doubled to deep left in the sixth to give Tigers complete control of the situation.
"We wanted to win this game. That was our goal, to win this one," Cabrera said. "We did it."
"It was a rocky road, it was a tough season, but in this business, you have to be able to take some hits," Leyland said. "This isn't a place for the faint-hearted. h**l, we took a lot of punches, a lot of them justified, some of them maybe not. But hey,
we can take a punch."
"It wasn't easy," said Fielder, who had four hits for the Tigers, "but we got it done."
For the Royals, Alex Gordon belted a home-run to right in the sixth to score the first run. Jeff Francoeur also drove in crucial runs to reduce Tigers lead to 6-3 but his effort was never going to be enough.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be very pleased with what he saw from his men in the opener and surely he will be expecting them to take the momentum into the next game to end the season on a bright note.
