Detroit Tigers defeat Minnesota Twins 7-1 – MLB Update
Justin Verlander allowed only a run in over seven innings on Tuesday, August 16 to lift a 7-1 victory for the Detroit Tigers against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park.
Verlander become baseball’s first 18-game winner, which also enabled the team to extend the lead in the American League Central.
"That sort of stuff's for the end of the season to look back at," Verlander said. "Not right now. Right now it's a time to focus on my next start -- or get ready tomorrow for us to go out there and win another baseball game."
There was a wild applause when he achieved this milestone. While his team and fans were exceedingly joyous, even the rivals were all praise for the starter. Among those who spoke highly of Justin Verlander was Ben Revere.
"He's a tough cookie. That's why he's about to win the Cy Young," Minnesota outfielder Ben Revere said. "When he's going like that, with that lineup, you don't have a chance.”
Nick Blackburn had a rather fast start to make on Monday when the game kicked off. He pitched a scoreless inning against the Tigers only to be followed by a more rigorous set of pitches by Justin Verlander, as he had a 29-pitch first inning.
After Verlander threw the third, giving up no run, Nick Blackburn was subject to big hits in the third. Miguel Cabrera had a hit to centre which helped him score two runs, giving the team an early lead. With the lead to the Tigers side, Verlander maintained
his ascendancy on the game.
Blackburn, on the other hand, was unable to contain the Detroit offence. The fifth inning proved utterly disastrous as hitter after hitter scored a single each to take the lead to 5-0. Victor Martinez, Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta had a single each to give
the Tigers the lead.
Even the change of guards could not help the Tigers. Ramon Santiago homered to take the lead to 6-0 while Miguel Cabrera drove in another single in the 3-hit two run sixth inning of Phil Dumatrait. With that lead, Verlander was hard to be beaten.
Verlander pitched into the eighth and gave up only a run to Justin Morneau to wrap up his magical spell. Once Joaquin Benoit was asked to toss the ninth, he remained totally effective. The closer did not allow even a single hit to wrap up the game with 7-1
win for the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers managed to put in a tremendous effort as they restricted the Twins’ offence from getting any big hits against them. The Twins will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up.
