Detroit Tigers defeat Oakland Athletics 8-3 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers posted six important runs in the fifth inning to write their 8-3 win over the Oakland Athletics in the first game of the two-game series at the Comerica Park on Tuesday, July 19.
After the Athletics stroked three runs to set a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers utilised their full swings to place six runs in the bottom of the inning. Magglio Ordonez added an RBI single on a sacrifice fly to start the inning. Miguel
Cabrera followed with a dazzling 417-feet long two-run homer to take his team into leading position. Johnny Peralta widened the lead with his RBI single and Carlos Guillen hammered a crushing two-run homer to take the game out of the A’s hands.
Brennan Boesch scored an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to cement the Tigers’ 8-3 win over the rivals.
"It stretches out your line-up any time you get another hitter going in there," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "Especially a switch hitter like Carlos and a proven hitter."
Their starter Rick Porcello provided full support to batters and made a perfect come-back after allowing three runs in the top of the third inning. Without allowing further runs and walking none over six innings, the right-hand pitcher grabbed his ninth
win of the season. He also struck three batters over his 107 pitches to improve his record to 9-6 with 4.76 ERA.
Phil Coke fulfilled his duty as a relief pitcher and remained scoreless in just over one inning while closer Al Alburquerque tossed a one-hitter one inning to finalise the Tigers’ 51st win of the season. The Tigers now have 51-49 record with 29
wins at home.
The A’s starter Guillermo Moscoso, who did not yield any run in his first three innings, went a little loose in the fourth and the fifth. He allowed seven runs on nine hits including two homers as he walked one to receive his fifth win of the season.
"It is kind of frustrating, because we played very good baseball, and I lost the game in one inning," Moscoso said. "It was really just three mistakes, but they did damage on all of them. You can't leave fastballs up when you are trying to get out of a jam."
Craig Breslow also allowed one run on two hits over his 14 pitches spell. Fautino De Los Santos tossed one inning and struck-out two batters. Closer Brian Fuentes did not allow any run in the ninth inning but did not obtain any support from the batters.
The A’s have a chance to get the next game, as the Tigers has scheduled to promote Duane Below from Triple-A Toledo to start Wednesday’s game. This might be a chance for the A’s to come up with a better performance.
