Detroit Tigers demolish Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 – MLB Spring Training
Detroit Tigers looked in commanding form on Thursday, March 8 as they demolished Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 at the Charlotte Sports Park, Port Charlotte, Florida in their Spring Training game of the 2012 Major League Baseball season. If the Tigers continue their excellent form throughout the season, not only can they win the American League Central Division but they will also have a great chance to secure the World Series title.
Showing their class, composure and depth, the Tigers did not allow their opponents to breathe in a completely one sided contest. Tigers’ pitcher Doug Fister was quite outstanding for the Tigers as he pitched three scoreless innings to let the Tigers establish complete control over the contest. Miguel Cabrera and Delmon Young made key contributions in hitting department of the game. Young hit a might three run home run while Cabrera added three big hits for the Tigers to leave Tampa Bay Rays in disarray.
"You could see with Price and (Jeremy) Hellickson, they're just throwing fastballs right now," said Young. "They weren't mixing their breaking balls or anything. Then when the season comes around and they start mixing it up and when the lights come on, then you see the real hitters."
David Price provided the Rays with a great start as he tossed up two scoreless innings to keep his side in the game. However, once he left the mound due a neck spasm, the Rays were unable to contain the Tigers’ hitters.
"It has happened to me two times before," Price explained. "The towel just catches the back of my head and it pulls my neck forward. I just felt it a little bit in back of my neck and just wanted to be cautious with it."
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland was very pleased to see the hitters living up to the expectations. The Tigers had worked hard in their pre-spring training batting sessions and it seems their hard work is paying off now. Having won six out of six games in Spring Training, the Tigers are eager to prove themselves a force to be reckoned with.
